Maximize Your Horse Show Dollar   no comments

Posted at 12:14 pm in Family, Hobbies

In today’s economy it is imperative that you show smart. Many people are trying to decide how to continue to show with a smaller budget.

The first thing to do is determine if you want to be a weekend warrior or point to a few prestigious shows. Make a decision and stick to it. The other determining factor is points. Do you need just a few more points to finish a Register of Merit or Superior? If your horse in enrolled in any breed or specialty incentive funds or state programs such as the Quarter Horse Incentive Fund or Kentucky Breeders Incentive Fund (KYBIF) every point your horse earns puts money in your pocket. It also increases the value of your horse should you ever wish to put it up for sale or if you own a stallion increase the stud fee.

If you enjoy showing every weekend perhaps you look at some of the local saddle club shows as they have payback classes that can help pay for expenses. You also can offer to band or braid other horses. This will not hurt your Amateur status and can help pay for your show. Y

Find other Amateurs and split a hotel room, bring a cooler full of sandwiches and drinks. If you are adventurous bring a cot and sleep in the tack stall. You can save a ton of money and stretch your dollar.

Also take some time to look at the trends of a show. If a show is 100 miles away but has cheaper fees and more horses it is probably a better show for you. Some shows are now offering discounts or free meals. Again this can help you squeeze that extra show into the schedule.

How To Add Years To Your Grill: Clean It   no comments

Posted at 10:48 pm in Family, Food

Sounds simple huh?  The biggest reason for grill failures and repairs are  because their owners do not regularly clean them.  I don’t mean shine them up like they are new but keep them from having encrusted burn remnants from the past two years.

Here are some tips on keeping your grill healthy.

After Every Use

If at all possible you should clean your grill before you put food on as well.  Again it is easier to clean it when it is hot so turn it on, wait a few minutes and then give it a quick scrub.  If you do this before and after, your grill will be in great shape.

At minimum clean your grill after use.  It is easy to get it clean when it is hot so this is the best time to do so.  If you have a stainless steel grill be sure to only use a brass bristled brush as the others may scratch the surface.  If your grill grates are iron than you can use any brush.

Optional but Highly Suggested

  • Check the grease/ash catcher and empty it when needed.
  • Clean off the side tables so stains do not set in and bugs are not attracted.
  • After you grill is dry, cover it.  This will keep it from rusting.  We sell some great grill covers so no excuses.

The Once a Year Thorough Cleaning

  1. Give the grill a thorough cleaning, check the heat diffuser for buildup of food debris.  Clean the lid and firebox, if you have a large amount of buildup you can use a heavy-duty cleaner.  If you see what looks like paint peeling that is just baked on grease, simply remove it with a damp paper towel.
  2. Check for corrosion and scrub away any white spots.
  3. If the outside is looking dingy you can repaint it with a heat resistant grill paint (exterior only!)
  4. If Grilling season is over, store your grill in a dry spot.

If you have a gas grill:

  1. Check the burner tubes.  If your flame is more yellow than blue you may have cracks
  2. Check the controls and lubricate any sticky controls
  3. Check the igniter and if it is not working then you may need to clean the tip of the electrode.

If you do these steps your grill will stay in better shape and you will get more years out of them.  Make sure to check your manufacturer’s directions as well.

Do You Know Why Your Cat Is Obese?   no comments

Posted at 9:51 pm in Family, Food, Home

My one-eyed feral brat aka Copy Cat has decided to go on strike against his regular food. Now if I was a one-eyed feral who won’t let anyone touch him despite being a house cat for THREE YEARS I would be happy just to be fed. But he lives in our house so he goes on strike and sits 10 feet away from me and looks pathetic.

So I am on the hunt for food. This happens about once every six months where one of my cats decides it is time for a change. So I pullout my favorite bookmark, Janet and Binky’s Cat Food List. This is a great resource for calories as well as carbohydrates “as fed.” We try to feed food under 8 carbs as fed for Slakk’s blood sugar to stay in the zone.

From Slakk’s Diabetes I learned that the labels on the cans are about worthless so I rely on this list for my information. The rule of thumb for the amount of calories a cat should intake everyday goes something like this:

(13.7 x Optimum weight) +70 = daily calories

My cats are ummm good converters, so they actually stay at around 170 calories per day, sometimes up to 200 but a normal weight 12 pound cat should figure eating around 230 calories per day.

So for some reason I went on a website for commercial cat food – VERY well known brand (no I am not going to name them because they do not deserve the publicity) and they recommend 1 can of their over-processed, slaughter house reject, pesticide filled cans of death, oops I mean cat food per every 2.5 pounds. Doing the math that is 4.8 cans per day…FOR ONE CAT.

After I got up from the floor I looked at the calories – about 435 total, assuming any cat could shove all of that in their mouth in a day (Slakk has offered to try), that is 200 calories OVER the optimal calories – and these are the people telling YOU they understand nutrition and you should trust them?

And then lets do the math, each can of death is $.079 times 5 (because you know you will feed 5 cans not 4.8) equals $3.95 PER DAY. That means in 30 days you would spend $118.68 not including tax, but hey you could forget your gym membership BECAUSE YOUR CAT WOULD BE SO FAT PICKING THEM UP WOULD BE A WORKOUT. If you have four cats like me then you would spend more on cat’s food then groceries

So then I look at a better alternative Evanger’s Canned Cat Food – Organic Chicken 5.5 oz. Can at $1.49 for a 5.5 ounce can. That is approximately the same calorie count as one day’s allotted calories. I feed this sometimes and honestly my big pig cats only get about ¾ of a can because quality calories mean less calories, but to be fair I will use the proper amount. So that equals $44.70 a month a whopping $74 dollar difference IN FAVOR OF A QUALITY PRODUCT.

Amazing huh?

If you really want to see your head explode look at the as fed calories for dry food, one cup equals 350-650 calories – ONE CUP. I will not even discuss the carbs…you know that is bad.

Raise your hand if your idea of feeding your cat is to take a bag of kitty crack and dump it in a self feeder…Don’t worry that was me before Slakk went diabetic. I ask you this – Do you think your cat is only eating what they need or are they gorging on the calorie heavy, carbohydrate-ridden pesticide filled bags of death (yes, related to the over-processed, slaughter house reject, pesticide filled cans of death).

So back to the web, I went to one of the lower calorie, yet highly-publicized dry cat food bags and read that my darlings should eat one cup or 362 calories – yes 150% of the recommended calories for a healthy 12 pound cat. Assuming my cats would self regulate at one cup (yeah sure) the kitty crack would cost a smidge over $1.20 per day.

Well until Slakk’s diabetes went out of remission and I was spending $100 dollars on his insulin alone. But again the cancellation of the gym membership would help out. Until one of the others went on the juice too…

But if you are feeding your cat on the calorie heavy, carbohydrate ridden pesticide filled bag of death or over-processed, slaughter-house reject, pesticide filled cans of death know this. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. We have been told that these companies know best and love our pets – well they are loving our pets to DEATH. My husband has banned me from the pet food aisle because I become an evangelist for proper feeding.

Kudos to companies like PETCO.com who have seriously started not only offering, but showcasing healthy alternatives to the cans/bags of death. Baby steps folks, babysteps.

I was in your shoes at one time and it took almost losing my sweet baby Slakk to learn his food was killing him. But now I know better and know feeding healthy is CHEAPER and your cat feels better and your vet bills go down and their coat shine goes UP. And maybe just maybe they will shed some weight.

Selling Your Horse – Part 2   no comments

Posted at 12:20 pm in Business, Family, General, Hobbies, Ideas

Years ago selling a horse included putting an advertisement in a publication and wait for calls. Today with the Internet, many new avenues are available to selling your horse. Once you have chosen where to advertise and picked out a price you need to write your advertisement.

When writing your advertisement make sure you focus on the positive, but don’t over embellish. If your horse would make a nice hunter but has not been started over fences then make sure to say they are a prospect. Your horse is a nice horse but it cannot be a 17 hand jumper and a 14 hand cow pony. You my lose a real buyer when you try to make your horse everything for everybody.

Don’t forget to include any extras benefits your horse has, like breed or specialty incentive funds or state programs for which your horse is eligible.  These often will add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to a final sale price.  One such program is the Kentucky Breeders Incentive Fund (KYBIF).  If you have horses for sale in Kentucky, then this should definitely be listed.  This also applies if you have Kentucky Stallions eligible for KYBIF.

Make sure that you research your horse’s pedigree. Some breeds require you to pay a few dollars for a report but it is usually well worth it. While being well bred is not the end all, it does give a buyer a good idea of the horse’s potential. Having a show record or being related to successful horses will enhance the appeal of the horse and help you sell quicker and for a better price.

Presenting Your Horse For Sale   no comments

Posted at 2:55 pm in Business, Family, General, Hobbies

Years ago trying to sell a horse meant placing an advertisement in one of the major publications then wait for the calls to come in. Today with so many people with Internet access, many new avenues have opened up and are available to assist in selling your horse.  The major benefits of online advertising are shorter times to market, less restrictions on who sees it (mot just magazine subscribers), and better ways to track the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.  Below, we’ve presented some things to keep in mind when starting online marketing of your horse.

Know Your Audience

Take the time and look through the different websites that advertise horses for sale, and find the right one where your horse fits in. For instance, don’t try to sell a cutting horse on a website that advertises jumpers. Conversely, don’t decide to place an ad for your Grand Prix jumper in the local paper.

Free is not always free

Many websites offer free ads and some like Craigslist do a good job of helping local people sell local horses. However, on the major advertising websites, it could be difficult to get people interested in viewing text only ads or advertisements without pictures.  Offering ads with full color, and good resolution images, will go much further than just text.

The Price Right

Pricing your horse correctly is one of the important factors. Many times, if you over-price the horse in the beginning, you end up selling it for less money than if you had just priced it correctly to begin with. When determining price make a list of your horse’s positive qualities. Are they enrolled in any incentives like the AQHA Incentive Fund or APHA Breeders’ Trust, are they Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund (KYBIF) eligible?

Once you have a list of their features take the time to review the other ads that are already out there. Find ten good comparable horses, check their prices, and then decide on your listing prince and final selling price.

To get an idea of what comparable horses are selling for, go to KyBIF Only and see what’s listed there.

Carpet Cleaning for Your Health

When
someone is diagnosed with indoor allergies, one of the first things
he’s probably told to do is to remove any wall-to-wall carpeting in the
house. It’s true that carpeting traps allergens, but let’s take another
look at this view.
Just what is an indoor allergen and where does it
come from? The things most likely to make you sneeze and wheeze are
pollen, household dust, dust mites, pieces of cockroach carcasses,
chemicals, mold spores, dried food particles, clothing and bedding
fibers, soil tracked in from the outdoors, pet dander, and dead human
skin cells. Yuck! Unless you walk around in a plastic bubble, you can’t
avoid all of them. Every time you walk outside to go to work or school,
you bring at least some of these allergens into your home with you.
You
might think with good reason that hard-surface floors are easier to
keep clean because you can actually see the dirt you just cleaned up.
Take a look at the dust drifting through a sunbeam right after you’ve
swept the floor. That stuff floats around until it settles back on to
the floor and furniture. When you walk across the floor, you disturb
the dust and it starts floating around again where you breathe it in.
That’s not allergen-free living, is it?
If you’ve ever fallen off a
bike or if you are middle-aged, you probably know that gravity isn’t
your friend. If you have allergies, sometimes gravity can work in your
favor, though. Gravity causes allergens to settle back to the floor.
Here’s the beauty of carpeted flooring. Carpeting is actually the
biggest filtration device in your house. Dirt and allergens settle into
the carpeting fibers where they remain trapped and can’t drift around.
All
those yucky things we mentioned above are now trapped in your
carpeting. Daily vacuuming is your best friend in removing some
allergens from your indoor environment, as long as you take the vacuum
outdoors to clean it afterward. Otherwise, you’re recontaminating your
house with all the dust that puffs out of the filters and bags. Most
household vacuums don’t have enough suction to pull everything out of
your carpeting. Periodically, you’re going to need to bring in a hired
gun, a professional carpet cleaning service.
You already have enough
problems with indoor air quality. You don’t want to add to them by
using a carpet-cleaning service that depends on toxic cleaning
solutions to do the work. Not only are they bad for your air quality
while they’re being used, they often leave behind residues in your
carpeting that you will be breathing in for months.
This is where
our all natural cleaning methods come in. We use soft water that makes
cleaning more effective, leaving your carpeting cleaner and healthier
because it doesn’t leave a residue behind on the fibers. We move your
furniture around as we clean so we get into all those nooks and
crannies where allergens like to lurk.
We’ve been clean carpeting for over 20 years in organic carpet cleaners new jersey all natural carpet cleaners NJ

Choosing the right carpet cleaner in New Hope Pa   no comments

Carpet cleaners in New Hope Pa

There are a lot of ways to find a carpet cleaner in New Hope PA, you can go to the yellow pages, you can go online, you can go to Google, you can find them advertising in the New Papers. There is no end to the list of carpet cleaners in New Hope Pa.
When there is a bad economy and people are laid off there jobs some
will resort to doing jobs that they think are “Easy” like carpet
cleaning and painting as well as cleaning windows and Janitorial
services. I know that people must pay the bills but Carpet Cleaning is
not as easy a it looks. The labor involved is one thing that is yet to
be desired. Also the knowledge of the chemicals that is needed to
properly clean carpets without striping the Scotchguard or Dupont
Teflon from the Advanced Generation carpets takes years  and years of
experience, as well as years of proper training. So to call yourself a
professional carpet cleaner takes years of experience and dedication.
I have heard of some real bad horror stories of peoples carpets
shrinking and also smelling real bad during the drying process. For
